Location & History

Restaurant Scala is located in the historic Art Deco Hotel Montana in Luzern, which sits majestically on a hill overlooking Lake Lucerne. Opened in 1910, the building is considered one of the city's last classic palace hotels, captivating guests with its striking architecture and the hotel's own historic funicular railway. The exceptional location in Luzern's Halden district offers guests a spectacular panoramic view over the lake basin, the historic old town, and the Central Swiss Alps. Today, the establishment, which is awarded 15 Gault&Millau points, combines

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

What I read about this address in the press and online, before and after my visit — summed up here so you can put my own impressions in context.

The Good

  • The breathtaking view from the terrace over Lake Lucerne, the city of Lucerne, and the surrounding mountains is regularly praised in the highest terms by critics and guests alike.[2][4]
  • Gault&Millau consistently awards the restaurant, under the direction of head chef Johan Breedijk, an outstanding 15 points.[2][4]
  • The stylish Art Deco ambience of the dining room, made even fresher and more modern by a multi-million-pound renovation in 2024, is a complete triumph of design.
  • The wine list, as well as the rich, lovingly presented bread buffet at the start of the meal, leaves a lasting, positive impression on critics.[1]

The Bad

  • Gault&Millau criticised a kingfish dish for its unbalanced ratio of ingredients, as the plate was served with a great deal of vegetables but only a very small amount of fish.[4]
  • Critics note that head chef Johan Breedijk sometimes tends to put a few too many components on the plate rather than one too few in his creations.
  • The vegan selection on the menu is described by guests as rather limited and not particularly extensive.[3]
