Perched on the edge of Lake Lugano, Ristorante Arté al Lago offers a visually stunning dining experience where contemporary art meets the gentle lapping of Swiss waters. While the kitchen team under Chef Alessandro Boleso displays immense ambition and genuine heart, the culinary execution and wine presentation still have a few hurdles to clear before truly reaching the stars. It is a beautiful, highly promising evening that is already deeply satisfying, even if some of the finer details require a touch of refinement.

Setting & History

The restaurant finds its home in a historic building on the Rivetta Alfonsina Storni, which once operated as the Hotel Du Midi. Acquired in 2002 by the Garzoni family—owners of the prestigious Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola across the street—the ground floor was masterfully transformed into a dual-concept art gallery and gourmet restaurant. This unique space showcases rotating exhibitions of international sculptors and painters, seamlessly blending cultural sophistication with the natural grandeur of the Ticino shoreline.

The Chef

Executive Chef Alessandro Boleso took the culinary reins in January 2025, succeeding the long-serving Frank Oerthle. Boleso, who honed his craft under the legendary Gualtiero Marchesi at L'Albereta and spent sixteen seasons in luxury properties around Lake Como, brings a philosophy of essentialism and modern Mediterranean flair to the table. Alongside his trusted Executive Sous Chef Junio Carlo Pini, Boleso strives to create seasonal, waste-conscious dishes that celebrate simplicity, such as his signature risottos and refined beetroot creations.

Ambiance

The dining room itself is absolutely prachtig, boasting an elegant aesthetic that mirrors the five-star pedigree of its parent hotel. Through the expansive windows, the panoramic view of Lake Lugano framed by the twinkling lights of the city is nothing short of breathtaking. However, the serene atmosphere was somewhat disrupted by a rather horrific background playlist of rock piano hits. For a space that puts so much effort into its visual and artistic curation, a more sophisticated musical backdrop is sorely needed.

Service

The service team deserves immense praise for their warmth and attentiveness. From start to finish, the staff was incredibly friendly and eager to please, earning a well-deserved five out of five for their hospitality. While the technical beverage knowledge is still developing, the sheer heart and effort put forth by the team make for a highly gezellig and welcoming evening. You can clearly see they are aiming for a Michelin star, and the hospitality foundations are firmly in place.

Food & Wine

We opted for the surprise tasting menu, which demonstrated clear Michelin aspirations but yielded mixed results. The meal began with a pleasant amuse-bouche, though the cannelloni lacked the satisfying crunch one hopes for, while the caviar crumble spoon was agreeable. The absolute highlight of the evening was a beautifully cooked zander, executed with precision. Unfortunately, the main course of deer fell flat; it bore the hallmarks of overly long sous-vide cooking, resulting in a soft texture and a crust that tasted far from fresh. Dessert was a pleasant, not-too-sweet conclusion, though it didn't quite scale the heights of exceptional pastry work.

On the wine front, there is significant room for improvement. While the list itself is decent, the glassware is notably poor—heavy, thick-rimmed, and entirely out of place in a luxury establishment. Serving fine wines, let alone Krug champagne, in glasses that feel as though they were sourced from a budget department store is a missed opportunity. The wine pairing was served with genuine passion by the sommelier, but the selections themselves remained safe and average, lacking the excitement of a true flagship dining experience.

Guides & Press — My Take

While the major guides celebrate Ristorante Arté al Lago with 16 Gault&Millau points and praise its purist culinary philosophy, my experience suggests the kitchen is currently closer to a high-quality Bib Gourmand level than a Michelin star. The press often highlights the seamless service and culinary precision, and while I agree that the hospitality is top-tier, the food and wine program need a tighter focus on detail to match the lofty praise of the guidebooks.

Verdict

Ristorante Arté al Lago is a spectacular venue that offers a lovely, memorable evening by the water. With a spectacular view and a wonderfully warm service team, it is easy to enjoy your time here. If the kitchen can elevate its main courses and the management invests in proper, high-quality glassware, this lakeside gallery will truly become the masterpiece it aspires to be. Nou nou, it is certainly worth a visit for the view and the hospitality alone.

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

What I read about this address in the press and online, before and after my visit — summed up here so you can put my own impressions in context.

  • The kitchen, led by Alessandro Boleso, wins over critics with a philosophy of the essential, harmoniously combining tradition and contemporary creativity.
  • The service, led by Maître Davide Bolzonello, is highlighted as highly professional, attentive, and the guardian of true hospitality.[2]

The Bad

  • Some guests felt the lunch menu was a little too sparse and expressed a desire for slightly more generous portions.[2]
